Do you remember when you were a kid just starting to get involved with sports? I do. The fun of just hanging out with a bunch of kids and trying to do what the pros do on TV. What a great feeling. We'd spend hours throwing, catching ,hitting and fielding. We learned how to play baseball by being with other kids and playing baseball. It was great.
Nowadays groups of kids don't just get together and play ball. They join little league, play a game or two a week, and that's it. From what I've seen the level of ability of the average kid has dropped, but the stars today are much better that they used to be. It's made me wonder why that is.
The conclusion that I've come to is the level of instruction that kids recieve is vastly different. The majority of the kids on a little league team only play baseball the once or twice a week that the team gets together, and that may only be for a period of a month or two. The handful of really good players are the ones that receive instruction and practice time when they are away from the team.
The next question becomes "how do I give my kids the best instruction possible." With the advancement of technology the last few years there is an abundance of trinign materials available. There are websites, books, videos and gurus that are available to help with any subject. Some of it is good, and some of it is crap.
That is the point of this blog. To review the materials available for baseball instruction and seperate the good from the crap. I'll keep you posted on what I find.
